How long have you been paddling?

I’ve been paddling since 1999, with a wing/rudder since 2003, and in a surfski since 2007. I’m a warm weather paddler only getting out May - October. I always look forward to starting up again in spring.
Primary Paddling Location:

Fishers Island Sound, CT & Napatree, RI
Favorite Surfski Race, Why?

I like strong current and chaotic waves because that is what I am used to paddling in. Flat water does not excite me much.

Main Training Partner if any:

I paddle solo most of the time. My only paddling goal is to have fun, therefore I don't train seriously. However, my attitude drives me to paddle pretty hard and seek out waves to surf. Any “training” is just a byproduct of having fun.

Racing Accomplishments

I’ve only done one surfski race: The 2008 Double Beaver in very challenging conditions. I wanted to finish "in the middle," so very happy with 10th place out of 20 racers. I won the fast sea kayak class of the Jamestown Race both times I competed. I was one of the paddlers in the Hurricane Ivan race – that was very cool!

Other Significant Athletic Accomplishments:

I completed the Ocean State Marathon in 1979. I’m an accomplished sailboat racer in everything from dinghies to grand prix keelboats.

What you like about surfskis, surfski racing, paddling:

Surfskis are so simple and safe. Get on it and go - no skirts or fancy rolls required. I sell yachts for a living, but my favorite boat is my surfski. It is the most practical way to enjoy the ocean.
