1. Course:

This is a mostly open water, 13 mile race for intermediate to advanced surfski paddlers with the full array of rough water skills.

The start is in the mooring fields between the Bay Voyage Restaurant and the Conanicut Yacht Club.

Head south toward Beavertail Point and around the Buoy several hundred yards off of Beavertail Lighthouse. Round the Buoy, head North following the cliffs to the East. After approximately 1 mile the cliffs will diminish and transition to a cove. It is in this cove where the turn mooring ball is located. It is a white floating ball the diameter of a car tire, that is the first you will encounter as you enter into this cove (see picture at right).

Round this white mooring ball counterclockwise. You will be turning away from the shore as you turn 180 degrees and reverse the course back.

Word to the wise--if Glicker shows up don't follow him as you may end up in Mauritius in those bomb crater waves!

2. Safety

You are responsible for your own safety! There is NO safety boat! Come fully self sufficient. Think of this as an informal gathering of paddlers who hold an informal race.

Completing the Blackburn Challenge would be an appropriate qualifier. If you are not comfortable and skilled doing the Blackburn, then this race is not for you. You must have very strong skills at remounting your ski. Conditions are usually very challenging.

There are several take out points if necessary. Ft. Wetherall, Mackerel Cove, Heads Beach and Ft. Getty. Familiarize yourself with these places using a map or chart.

Have sufficient food/drink for 2-3+ hrs. depending on your skill and conditions. Carry your cell phone in a completely waterproof bag. Bring you paddle leash or leg leash and wear your PFD!

3. Alternate Course

There are many options for alternate courses toward the northern end of the island. There is always a lee side of the island so unless the weather is really bad there will be a race.

4. Prizes and Raffle: TBD

Look forward to seeing everyone!!
