Sakonnet River Race ChartPlease refer to charts for details. Familiarize yourself with the chart before coming to the race. The fastest paddlers will finish in roughly 2 hours.

The course runs along shore of Sakonnet River. The river is 2 to 4 miles wide with considerable fetch making for an outstanding downwind leg depending on wind and current. The river leads out to RI Sound. A typical day is a Southwest wind of 7-10 knots with 1 foot seas. On an average big day it will be 2ft to 3ft seas particularly from Black Point to 3rd Beach with swells and confused refractory chop in this section.

The planned course is straight forward and similar to last year’s. We launch with a running start on my mark from McCorrie point beach headed South to northern most part of 3rd Beach, Middletown which is approximately 6.5 miles. We turn on a mooring clockwise, and head back to McCorrie Point. Once just past start line (McCorrie point), we will turn on a buoy (counter clockwise) and finish will be between 2 beach markers (where the cars are parked). Finish is in your boat when your boat touches beach between markers.

There will be only 3 categories: Men Surf skis, Women Surfskis, and combined kayak class for men and women for simplicity. OC1’s (men/women)will be included in Surfski category upon request from an OC1 paddler.

Party: After the race, we will have food, drinks and the awards ceremony on the beach weather permitting. If foul weather, we will move it to my house up the street.

Safety: You are responsible for your own safety!!!! There are NO safety boat!!! You are responsible for your own safety!!!! Yes, I said that twice.

1. There are numerous take out points every ½ mile or so with 2 public beaches, Sandy Point, and 3rd beach, and many private smaller beaches if you need to take out and call for a ride back to the start. Know your skill level please. This is not a novice course! Make sure you can do the course. If you do not finish the course you must call the race director’s phone number to alert them so we do not begin an all out search for you.

2. Carry your cell phone in a waterproof bag not a zip lock bag!!

3. Attach your paddle leash or leg leash if you are paddling a ski.

4. It is mandatory that you wear your PFD!!!!! No exceptions! You will be DQ if you did not wear it. Thanks, Wesley

Thanks,
Wesley
